Browntown Christmas

By all accounts Christmas in Browntown was a HUGE success! Starting with dinner at Uncle Rich & Aunt Ginger's with Tim, Terry, Kara and Ritchie on 12/22. It is always fun watching the little ones so excited about Christmas, and Little Ritchie & Kara certainly lived up to the expectation. The arrival of Win & Emma on 12/23 signaled the start of Christmas in Browntown, maybe next year Andrew will be able to join us live, instead via cell phone which would make the holiday season PERFECT! We were able to share Christmas morning with Auntie Char & Uncle Keith and Grammy. The day started with the traditional Creamed Chipped Beef & Biscuits followed by the main event (Prize opening). The day continued with a wonderful dinner and much groaning. Phone calls with Andrew to check in on the ATL crew.

The day after and the festivities just kept on rolling. Uncle Rich & Aunt Ginger arrived for a day of visiting and of course another meal. This one in the form of a Christmas Brunch. More phone calls to/from the ATL to keep Andrew in the loop. An unexpected visit from an old Arlington High School friend, Mike Natrella and the day was complete! It was great catching up after not seeing Mike for some 15 yrs +/-. After Win departed for North Baltimore (we're still waiting for pictures), Emma, Mom and I settled in for a Post-Christmas movie & popcorn. Exciting by any standard!

Since Mom and I will be leaving for the ATL on Thursday, today (Tuesday) will be spent taking the tree down. By the way, I did make the anual trek to the dump and yes, there were already two discarded Christmas trees there. Emma leaves for home tonight (with Rachel in tow) and Mom and I follow on Thursday. Andrew, we're heading your way! Looking forward to a family dinner in the ATL on New Year's Eve with everyone + the extended ATL family of Jarrett, Rachel and Campbell. Until then, enjoy the few pictures here. More will follow from the next leg of this holiday trip.

Merry Christmas !!

Andrew, because you could not be with us, Win and I decided you would enjoy seeing some of the feast that was Christmas Dinner. Of particular interest (to us at least) was Auntie Char's dessert. We did think of you as we (I) shoveled it in. See you in a few days.

Atlanta Elvis Sighting!

Well, I got my first taste of the famed Redskins bar here in Atlanta. Commonly known as the "Bucket Cafe", no one was able to tell me why they call it a bucket. At anyrate, watching the Redskins with Andrew & Emma, at their favorite Redskins bar (they won by the way) AND our host at the bar being an Elvis impersonator (who knew Elvis was a Redskin fan???), WHAT could be better than all of that???? It was quite a scene I can assure you all. Just about every flavor of Redskin fan was represented. The crowd which was a respectable 30 - 40 people had a wonderful time. We had Mr. Negativity, Mr. I will wear EVERY Redskin piece of paraphanallia I own, Mr. Redskin Fan Lawyer (sorry your car got broken into), and assorted other fans that (I must say I was impressed) knew EVERY word of the Redskin fight song, even the verses that most DON'T know! They of course sang it out loud and proud after each score (sometimes twice). All in all it was a great experience. Since Mom and I will be Atlanta a little longer than we had planned, it turns out we'll be here for the final Redskin game on New Year's Day when they play the dreaded Philadelphia Eagles. Mom can get a first hand look at the assemblage of fans. Don't forget to wear your hoggette nose sweety! Sadly I didn't bring my camera which is probably a good thing, since "low profile" was the mode of the day. Too much fun just sitting and watching. I'm pretty sure flash bulbs would have been frowned upon by an outsider. More to follow as the holidays roll in. Looking forward to being with everyone!!

News From Browntown

News from Browntown is that it is beginning to look a lot like Christmas and it is COLD!! The snow has a pretty hard crust on it and with the temps. it doesn't look like it will melt before Christmas so ... we will most likely have a White Christmas!

Grammy and I went to the Cassada Bassoon Ensemble recital yesterday at the Presbyterian Church. It was very nice but the real hit of the day was meeting "little" Kenneth - the newest Cassada! He is cute as pie, fat and contented and a BIG baby - a real tons o' fun. Very social, grinning and reaching for anybody and everybody - he is much like his mother and looks like his daddy. Grammy and I have been invited to the Cassadas for the Dec. 23 Bassoon Christmas again this year and we plan to go along with Emma. It was really nice last year to get us in the spirit with the great music!

Anyway, Grammy and I had a nice day yesterday - went to church, went to Cracker Barrel for lunch afterward, a brief Christmas shopping trip to kill time before the concert and then the concert. It was a nice day and I still got some exam review work done in the evening.

Speaking of... tonight I have my final in Management and Wednesday night is the final in Prof. Communications and then I am done for the semester. Next semester is Math for Liberal Arts (LFCC course) and another Communications course. Although it is only two courses, since one is math I have to really focus.

Andrew and Emma, take care of Dad in Atlanta. Win, be careful in the cold and snow driving all over the place for meetings and such.

I am so looking forward to the Holidays here in Browntown and in Atlanta!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, EMMA!!!

On this day of Thanks.....

By allaccounts it was a wonderful Thanksgiving! A hardy "Well Done" to Win for the success of hosting his first Thanksgiving in his apartment. The trip down for us (mom, grammy, cleo and myself) began late in the afternoon on Wednesday, an attempt to beat the snow storm that had mom doing her best "Nana" routine. As it turned out, we not only beat the snow, but traveled with it, thru it and along side of it for many miles/hours. Cleo, as expected, didn't notice. All in all, I was glad the next morning, not to have to make the drive. Since we had everyone together, we took the opportunity to turn the visit into a birthday celebration for Emmalee and mom. Complete with "My Little Pony" birthday cake. After a trip to the Barter Theatre (Miracle on 34th Street) for the ladies, and a trip to the Cine-mall for the guys ("Walk The Line") we all sat down for cake and ice cream. I hope you all enjoy the pictues, there are many more that will surface from time to time. I'm especially fond of the 4 laptops going at once. Since Andrew wanted it known that there were 5 laptops going, I'll own up that I did put mine down to take the picture. Happy Andrew??? As always, posts are encouraged and welcomed from all.

Fun on the "Set"

Way to go Andrew....you made Aunt June's day! I thought you would all get a chuckle out of Aunt June's visit to the Nancy Grace set while visiting CNN. This was from the tour she went on with the cousins from Maryland. Looks like a good time was had by all!

News From Browntown

I have just had a very interesting conversation with one of our IBEW members who is getting ready to go to Miss. to help build a "camp" for relief/construction workers. He is going with a Presbyterian organization that has been there since the hurricane hit. He is taking three weeks off from work to go and will be back home just in time for Christmas. His sister just got back after being there for a month doing the same work.

It is so nice to have such an unexpected, inspiring encounter that can restore faith in humanity.

So much of the time I feel like I should be wearing that T-shirt that says "I See Stupid People"...

If You Have An Hour To Spare....

At the risk of sounding like Im shamelessly plugging CNN, I would advise anyone who has a chance to watch the special CNN Presents "Inside The Secret State: An Inside Look At North Korea" at some point.....It's indredible, and worth the hour for sure. I watched it Saturday and got up angry at the folks in DC (as usual) Mom, you'll especially dig it I think....So yeah, check it out, so Win and Dad, go ahead and Tivo that bad boy......

Not only did I have to do group work (I do not play well with others anyway much less from a "distance) we had to do a power point slide presentation - all from a distance! Interesting... anyway, only a couple more major papers and then on to final exams!

Harry Potter Mania!!!

Just wanted to let everyone know, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire opens tomorrow night at midnight. Audrey and I are going to a midnight show at Phipps Plaza. No, we are not wearing costumes. I guess the movie will have to suffice until the new book comes out, and that won't be for a while...

Little Walter? No. John Popper? Maybe....

So I had my second harmonica lesson this morning....The teacher is a nice guy, kinda young, and plays well. (Well, as far as I know he does) He says Im not a complete failure, so who knows, maybe one day Ill be able to play real music. Ive bought two harmonicas so far, since there are 2493490 different ones, in all different keys...I wanna have the carrying case before long, so I can carry them all around and look really cool. Ive been practicing, and Emmalee is asking me every day if I have practiced...I try not to do it to annoy the heck out of Jarrett and Emmalee but they swear it doesnt bother them...Ill see if thats still the case in a month. So I have had two lessons, and he has given me homework, and I like to think Ive made some progress. All I want to do is to be able to play some blues riffs and jam with people when guitars are broken out. Anyway, thats whats going on in my world at the moment, hope everyone has a good weekend......

News From Browntown

Thank heaven Virginia voters showed some sense! It was good to wake up to Governor Kaine et al this a.m.

Voting in Browntown was different. I used a paper ballot instead of the touch screen. I really do not trust the programming of those touch screen machines and there is no back-up in case of malfunction. A poor system designed for failure, devalues the entire voting process and sends a clear message that individual votes don't actually count anyway - and we wonder what has happened to our Democracy??!!

Anyway, the results were good this time around and we can only hope that the Democrats get over their "cult of personality" obsession with Hilary Clinton long enough to nominate a real candidate for '08. Although maybe the country will be such a mess by then that no one will want to win the Presidency - anyone who comes along to mop up after the Bush disaster will certainly be a one-termer. Then the Dems can get over Hilary with a sacrificial candidacy in '08 (she is sure to lose at the national level), watch the "winning" Republican struggle to pull us out of the mess their party created and then Dems can start anew in 2012. If the Dems will use some sense and work to rebuild from the bottom up during the next few election cycles it is possible they could have majorities in both houses of Congress and some other good foundation groundwork (like Va. with Dem. governor) laid out to position for a solid presidential victory in 2012.

It is clear that Republicans can win elections but cannot govern. That has been proven over and over again. Of course, the ethics involved in their "wins" is always questionable but nevertheless...

News From Browntown

The news from Browntown is that it is election day and I have not voted yet! I usually perform that civic duty in the early a.m. but I was running late this morning and so will do so after work. I am thinking it will be weird this year without the big hulking voting machines with the lever-operated curtain! Warren County has touch screen machines according to reports. I guess they have been pre-programmed to vote Republican so I will be voting with a paper ballot as allowed by law.

Dad voted last week absentee as per usual and is now in North Carolina. He is on an extended "tour" this week and will not be home until Tuesday next. His birthday was quiet but nice with phone calls, gift cards and a drive-by visit from Win - he treated us to lunch. The gift card was great- we went to Lowe's over the week-end and blew all but $1.87 of it! It was fun!

I studied most of the week-end for a test that ended up being scheduled for 8:50 P.M last night!! The class is scheduled 7:00 p.m. to 9:50 p.m. and the prof. scheduled it so that we had lecture on new material before the test and then the test! That is much too late for me to take a test and I think I am going to pull a "special needs accommodation" request thing. I cannot work all day long, sit through an hour and half lecture and then still be alert enough to take a test at a time of night when my body clock is telling me it is time for bed!! The prof. himself was yawning through the pre-test lecture. Oh well. Guess I will see if I can get some "accommodation" for future tests in his class. I could have gotten an A if I had been alert enough to have full brain function.

So maybe I want to be a teacher again...

I went to a clinic yesterday with Audrey, and got to meet musicians from the ASO. It was very cool, like meeting rock stars. For the second year in a row, the Atlanta Symphony has had this clinic for middle school students, where they offer tutorial sessions for kids who are auditioning for all-district band. The ASO musicians work with the kids on their solos to help them prepare for their auditions. It's a great program, these middle school kids are getting top-notch small group instruction with professional musicians. I wish I could have participated when I was a kid! So while the kids are doing their clinics, they also have clinics for the band directors. (I posed as a band director for the day). Cinnamon, my bassoon student, went to participate in the clinic. I'm really glad she had that opportunity. The prinicipal bassoonist and the contrabassoonist were both there. They worked with Cinnamon, and I got to network with them. It was very cool. They were impressed with my student (as they should have been) and one of the guys knows Chris Ulffers. I also sat in a clinic with one of the ASO horn players, which was very interesting. It was an excellent day, I was really glad to be able to participate. It was cool to learn about new teaching strategies, it kind of made me wish I had students to use them on... until Audrey got trapped by one of her crazy band parents. That brought me back to reality.

Viva Las Vegas....Well, Not Really, This Place Is Lame

Well, I didnt have internet access at the ultra classy Sahara Hotel (complete with roller coaster that ran around the place at all hours of the night) so I am going to try and recap all the festivities while I sit here in the airport enjoying the fruits of their wireless network. Ill start by saying this: if not for the bsolutely incredible amount of music that was going on here this week, I would have hated the trip. The city is a dump, it's glittery, it's too flashy, and Kacey and I decided that the mantra among rela estate developers is nothing more than "Make it bigger and glitzier than that one"-so with that said, here is a rough blow by blow of the trip:

Day One: Arrive in Denver, then off to Vegas, where I am three hours earlier than the folks coming from California. Kacey arrives, my sleep pattern is ALL KINDS of wack....We go to the Jimmy Buffett Margaritaville, and watch the strip from the balcony. Interesting, to say the least. Then its back to the hotel, where we kind of set the place up, and Kacey's good friend Emily from SD shows up. Emily is actualy from WV as well, and happens to live in the same complex as Kacey. Really cool girl, and her boyfriend, a Navy Chopper pilot arrives as well. Soon after, Emily's brother Ben, and his lady show up, they live in Johnson City, TN, and flew in from Greenville,SC. Cool people. They go gamble, Kacey and I head off to the Aladdin for a night with Trey Anastasio of Phish. Nothing funnier than dirty hippies standing in casinos trying to score tickets, and whatever else they are looking for. Kacey and I watch Trey, and while Ive never been a huge Phish fan, the man can jam......It was a "latenight" show, starting at midnight, by 1:45, Kacey and I had both fallen asleep....I had been up for what I counted as 27 hours.

Day Two: Up and ready to roll, off to day one of th Vegoose Music Festival....We arrive, set up in the stadium (where the UNLV football team plays) and get set up in time for String Cheese Incident. They jam for a good while, but began to overlap with Govt Mule, so I leave everyone and run over to catch Mule. Win, as usual, they rocked. Kacey and Company left and headed over the stage where Mule was rockin.......cant remember who we saw after that, but we did go see Col. Bruce Hampton shortly after, and as usual, Im amazed at how good those guys are. Makes me feel fortunate that they are hometown ATL boys, and play down the street a couple times a month. After Col. Bruce was done, we headed back into the stadium, and Dave Matthews hit the stage. I said it once, and Ill say it agian, as much as everyone loves to hate on Dave, he is good, and I really enjoyed it-it's a love hate thing I guess. Trey Anastasio came out and jammed with him, those two are two peas in a pod, thats for sure. They rocked out, and then day one was done-Kacey and I and the rest of the crew headed back to the hotel, and Kacey and I hit our next late night show. We were warriors, I gotta say...late nights, and lots of music. This time it was Moe.-Great band, who Jarrett is a huge fan of, and who opened for the Allmans last month. They rocked out for 3.5 HOURS.....They went on stage at 1 AM and didnt wrap up until almost 4:30-So tired would be an understatement.

Day Three: We all head back over for day two of Vegoose, probably the best day of the two-We hit the festival and found Moe onstage, once again, less than 10 hours from the end of the show the night before. It rocked though, as they always do.After some Moe, we headed over and checked out The Meters, funk based guys from New Orleans, who are awesome-They jammed for almost two hours-After the Meters, it was off to a little early 90's alternative with the Flaming Lips, who, not many other than Win may have heard of....They are downright weird but it was quite entertaining for sure. A little Jack Johnson after that, and back into the stadium for the hilight of the day, three hours of Widespread Panic. I had never seen Panic before, and it had been ages since i had been to a big stadium show, but it was the hilight of the weekend. I think it may be a tough thing to admit, but Panic may be the best rock and roll band on tour-after the ABB and Feat of course. Dad, if you like Billy Payne on keyboards, JoJo Hermann from Panic would be your man too, he is an awesome piano player, and of course as Win can attest, Dave Schools on bas is about as bad as it gets. They rocked for three straight hours, wearing all of us out. After the show, Kacey and I had tickets to another late night show, with Galactic, but after Panic, we were so tired, everyone ewnt back and fell asleep, and forgot to get up in time for latenight with Galactic.

Day Four: Emily, Ben, Donnie and Tara, the other folks with us, all left and headed back to California. Kacey and I spent the day on the strip, looking on in horror at how gawdy everything is, and how there isnt an ounce of taste in the entire place. It's madness, pure madness. Walked through the Bellagio, the MGM Grand, the Circus Circus, and were just amazed at how the place is so umm, well, you get the point. Basically we were killing time until the grand finale of the weekend, a Halloween show with Widespread Panic at the Thomas And Mack Center, where the UNLV basketball team plays. She and I were dressed up, I was a doctor and she was a nurse and we looked hilarious. Im gonna try and poste a bunch of pics on here, as soon as I figure it out. Panic once again rocked the entire place, and solidified my opinion that they may be one of the best bands on tour now. Win, I dont thinkyou have seen them yet, and while their crowd is alot of the hippie kids we have all grown to loathe, they are all there for the same reason, and its worth dealing with to see Panic. Rocked the place for three hours, and Dirty Dozen Horns showeed up as well and jammed with them. They covered I Put A Spell On You, and the hilight of the entire night, the old motown classic "Nowhere To Run To" I think by Martha Reeves maybe? Who knows, either way it was way cool, and everyone was in costume. Was an awesome way to end the weekend. So we got back to the hotel, crashed out, and here I am at the airport waiting to get on the plane. Gonna try and post some pics, if I can get it figured out......

Calling Andrew in Sin City

Andrew; How about some pictures of the festivities you're enjoying in Vegas? Win reports that you are in a nest of Jam Bands! If you have your camera handy I'm sure we would all enjoy some of the sights. "G" rated of course. It IS a family blog. Did you happen to catch Bill Payne w/ Jimmy Buffett at the MGM?

New Music

Well, I have the whole house to myself here in ATL. The boys are both gone, but Jarrett will be returning today. I went out last night with my good friend Nicole to hear from friends of mine play music, Arlington Priest. They played at Eddie's Attic in Decatur (a very cool place that I know you all would love). Of course, Arlington Priest was great. They played a few new songs, which was great. I'm really looking forward to their new cd coming out in the spring. You should all check out their website: www.arlingtonpriest.com.

Brother Henry also played last night. I had heard them there before, but forgot how much I liked them. I bought their new cd, it's a lot of fun. Chuck Leavell plays on it Win! Anyway, you should all check out their website too: www.brotherhenry.com.

Am I doing a good job as a groupie??? (I'm trying to pay it forward in advance, anticipating some Highland5 groupies!)

"All Hell Breaks Loose"

It's true, I've seen the first snow flake this morning. I'd post a picture, but it melted too quick! "All Hell Breaks Loose" as mom rushes around before dawn bringing in plants from the deck. Cleo very confused. Schools close in West Virginia. I leave for South Carolina where temps are in the 60's. Typical week in Browntown. More later.

News From Browntown

Does anyone have a memory of the day Andrew was born??

News From Browntown

It is hard to imagine that what was once a hotbed of eight Democrats living within spittin' distance of one another is now reduced to just three of us. Even so, it seems that there are more Democratic campaign signs on Browntown Road than I remember seeing before.

It's a shame that the Virginia gubernatorial campaign has become the national model for "nasty campaigns" with ugly, explotative, negative ads by Kilgore and pathetic attempts to talk out of two sides of his mouth and commit to nothing ads by Kaine. Oh well. I guess it could be worse - could be George Allen popping up on television every hour or so - AAAAAGGGGGHHHH!!

How is it down your way Win? People getting sick of the ugliness down there too? We sure are hearing a lot talk about how Kilgore is coming off looking really bad and the poll numbers are starting to reflect that - good! Finally negative ads get what they deserve - drop in the polls - hope it all shakes out that way at the polls. If nothing else maybe political campaigns will realize negative ads are just that - negative - as in not good for winning.

Christmas Shipment to Liberia!

Today Dad and I delivered five barrels to Mr. Garbla for shipment to Libria. The goods will arrive just about Christmas time.
Four of the barrels contained medical supplies, rice, nonfat dry milk and baby formula headed for the Red Cross in Liberia. The fifth barrel was filled with 50 pounds of rice, about 20 pounds of dried beans, about 36 pounds of nonfat dry milk, assorted crayons (about 40 boxes) and school supplies, games about 20 lbs. of oatmeal, toys, books and puzzles. The fifth barrel is headed for Children's Relief Ministry. The shipping container that was sent from Harrisonburg Baptist Church (Browntown partnered in that effort) arrived last Saturday. It had school desks and chairs in it for the Children's Relief Ministry orphan school along with other assorted school supplies. There was also some equipment for them to use in raising chickens (and eggs, of course) for the orphanage, I believe.
You can see from the pictures that the barrels were, indeed, delivered to Garbla's Garage in Hyattsville, MD. The son of Mr. Garbla (Dad and I call him "Mr. Garbla The Younger") was there to receive the barrels and assured us of their safe delivery - he will be there in Monrovia to receive them himself along with his father (the original Mr. Garbla who left last week for Liberia). Mr. G. The Younger is very excited as he is going home to Liberia in November and will be there until May. He is so pleased about the propsect of being there for the Presidential Inauguration on January 6. A great day for Liberia! Even during our short business transaction and brief conversation, the enthusiasm and anticipation about the prospect of peace and political stability came through loud and clear from him and his helper at the garage. They love their country.
Thanks to all who contributed to this shipment. Several family members got involved and non-family members answered the appeal very generously. We can all feel good about this family project - just imagine how those kids will be on Christmas with full bellies and a few toys and crayons!! A once a year treat for them!

0-3 This Weekend

Not that anyone cares, but I was 0-3 this weekend concerning football....Of course the Redskins loss was a perfect capper to a loser weekend, after the Cavaliers knocked off the Seminoles 26-21 in Charlottesville, and my fantasy team took a good thumping. Just a little chance to vent...in related news, the weather is absolutely perfection, i went out for coffee this morning and I could see my breath...Good times.....

News From Atlanta

Just so you all know, the weather here is too beautiful to describe. It's so nice out, that no one wants to do anything inside. It is killing Andrew that he has to be inside the house to watch college football. If he could, I know he would be watching it out here. I just got back from the store, I had to get some fall flowers for the front yard and porch, summer things are starting to look a little ratty. On Andrew's request, I got burgundy and gold mums (Redskins colors). Maybe if we are festive enough they will win tomorrow and I won't be grounded!

Not too much news here... work is crazy and annoying, everything else is great. Highland 5 will not be rehearsing this weekend, and will instead be rehearsing on Thursday (Andrew's birthday). I briefly toyed with the idea of throwing a party for the birthday boy, but realized that he would have to do all the inviting, as Jarrett is out of the country to do CNN groundwork for me. Oh well...

Audrey suggested the other day that we get a group together and go to a corn maze in north GA. I had to laugh, thinking of Win spending all those hours at the corn maze in Abingdon. I don't know if we are going to actually go or not.

Hope everyone is enjoying the weekend!!!

Update on the week

News From Browntown

I hope you all are well. I am SO looking forward to being all together for Thanksgiving. In case I have not updated you all on our plans, Mom, Grammy and I will be staying two nights in Abingdon. This should give us plenty of time to catch up, share time and just generally be together, which is becoming harder and harder to do. We really are looking forward to our time together.

I've spent the last two days in a less than ideal place. Agfa sent me to Dover Air Force Base, which, if you don't know, is the US point where all those killed in Iraq are recieved. We installed our equipment in the morterary (not sure of the spelling) so that the government can capture images of those fallen in Iraq. To say that it was unplesant is an understatment. I suppose it is necessary to capture the information, but when faced with real bodies, lost in a war based on a lie is just too much to witness. I'm glad this assignment is over. Keep safe, know that you are loved by us all, and that we look forward to being together in a few weeks.

On a happier note........Mom and I will deliver several barrels to Mr. Garbala filled with medical supplies (and some Christmas gifts) this weekend. I'm not sure of the exact ship date, but Mr. Garbala's letter indicates that the shipment is scheduled to arrive by Christmas! How cool is it that we can provide smiles to those faces we see on the news! The election in Liberia was held this week, but it will be several weeks before the results are known. Most likely there will be a run-off between the top two vote getters. More to follow. In the meantime, be well, be safe and cross your fingers that I can find a case of sweet potatoes for our dinner on Thanksgiving!

News From Browntown

News From Browntown
The news from Browntown is that all is quiet. Grammy and I went to the C-CAP annual covered dish dinner/meeting - saw some old friends I haven't seen in years - some of them are quite amazing. Still active in their upper 80s and 90s. Ginger Perry's mom is 90 years old and exactly the same as she was when I first met her 25 years ago! Hope I can be half as good at 60!

Dad stayed home and had left over eggplant parmesan. He is getting ready to travel this week and will be in Delaware and New York until Friday.

Have a good week all...

A Celebrity Among Us

Andrew and I just got home from CNN, where we had a private viewing of the Liberia Orphan package that Brenda prepared for Inside Africa. It was supposed to be on the show that was scheduled to air today on CNN International, but the show got bumped for the breaking news of the earthquake.

The package is excellent! The children are adorable, of course, and our very own Mom and Uncle Keith did an excellent job speaking to Brenda about the project and shipments. Yeah Mom!!!!

Hopefully I will be able to get an "appointment" with our web-designer this weekend and www.loeproject.org will be updated soon.

News From Browntown

News From Browntown
As you can see, the delivery has been made with some ceremony as is the Liberian custom. It doesn't show on the blog but Sister Sarah was prepared for a formal presentation in her elaborately stitched and beaded dress and matching head covering. The "officials" had prepared remarks and thank you's ready for her. I am amazed at the very little bit that it takes to be considered a gift to those who have nothing.

Warren Memorial Hospital has more stuff ready for us to pick up and Dad will get it Monday. We are hoping to send a "Christmas" barrel to the Children's Relief Ministry Orphanage with gifts for the children. I have the names and ages of all who reside there and it would be so nice to be able to send all of them a small gift - maybe a box of crayons and a coloring book or a small stuffed toy, a ball, etc. There are some educational toys and games here already that can be sent along also. The director of that orphanage wrote to me last month and was so proud that they were able to open the "upper school" (three classrooms with no walls, tin roof and dirt floor) because of the desks and chairs and school books sent by Browntown Church last time. To read his note you would have thought he was opening Browntown University!

Medical Supplies Delivery

These are the remaining pictures.

Medical Supplies Delivery

Here are the pictures from the presentation of medical supplies sent to Libera. I'll let mom explain in more detail.

Funny Cronkite Comment

Did anyone see what Walter Cronkite said on Larry King Live the other night?

“We’re an ignorant nation right now. We’re not really capable, I do not think the majority of our people, of making the decisions that have to made at election time and particularly in the selection of their legislatures and their Congress and the presidency, of course. I don’t think we’re bright enough to do the job that would preserve our democracy, our republic. I think we’re in serious danger.”

Couldnt agree more....

That's why Walter is THE MAN!

Ok, I'm not sure if any of you want this, or maybe you already do it, but, if you'd like an email notification when someone posts to the blog, it's easy. Click on your name in the "Contributors" section and follow the links to "EMAIL". There you can enter the email address you want the notice sent to. I find it helpful because I don't have to scroll down the blog looking at the "comment" area for how many numbers are there. Just a blog shortcut.

Celebrity Sighting

So I found out Friday night that one of the women that works at the after-school program where I volunteer lives in my neighborhood. She works at the dumpy little neighborhood bar, Moes & Joes. Now, mind you, in the "chi chi" area of the Virginia Highlands, Moes & Joes is a total dive, and it has been around forever, much longer than all the trendy places in the neighborhood. So Pricilla (sp?) checks IDs there most nights, and she knows EVERYONE.

I was working with the kids yesterday after school, and Pricilla was there. She told me that LANCE ARMSTRONG had been at Moes & Joes on Tuesday night!!! Well, actually she told me that Neil Armstrong had been there, you know, the biker guy ????? I asked her if she meant Lance Armstrong, and she said that yes, that was who she meant. He was at Moes & Joes just hanging out eating a burger (he eats??) and having a beverage, and everyone there starting calling people on their cell phones. The employees ended up having to sneak Lance out the back door!

I can't believe that Lance was across the street from our house and I totally missed it. He was across the street having a beer and I was at home in my pajamas working on Wolf Trap stuff!!! What is wrong with that picture???

I definitely have to get out more...

By popular demand, here's a picture of the corn maze. It's four acres, on property owned by Emory & Henry. We're doing it as a fundraiser in conjunction with the Washington County Farm Park. Our plan for next year is a 10 acre maze...

Liberia Shipment update

News From Browntown
Our last shipment of medical supplies to Liberia arrived safely but ran into a logistical problem with delivery to Merlin's Monrovia offices (Merlin's logistical problem not ours). Sarah Agbator, our contact in Monrovia, e-mailed me about the problem and together we made a decision to move forward in another direction so as not to waste the supplies. Because of Sarah's expertise, scrupulous honesty and excellent contacts, our shipment was donated to another very worthwhile organization which has great need.

Sarah contacted David Clarke, Secretary General of the Liberian Red Cross, and offered the donation which was accepted immediately and gratefully. Here is an excerpt from Sarah's report:

Mr. Clarke was very, very happy to hear this news and expressed his profound thanks and appreciation to you for identifying with the Red Cross at this time when they have been calling for help.

Mr. Clarke said the Red Cross operates a center called The Carter Center. The center, he added, caters to over two hundred children including orphans, raped children, and girls used in the war as soldiers' wives and their children. He was happy that the items will be of great help to the children.

Four days later, I was invited to make a formal presentation of the items. Rev. Diggs, who is the head of the Carter Center, was on hand to receive the barrels. Photos were taken during the presentation. I will send them to you when they are printed and delivered to me. Rev. Diggs expressed his appreciation to you for the donation.

Sarah is the perfect person to help us with this little project because of her medical background as a nurse, her extensive contacts among the humanitarian relief organizations in Liberia and her direct connection to the U.S. Embassy where her husband is employed. She is also well aware (without being asked or having it called to her attention) of the need for accountability and documentation of proper delivery of donations. That documentation assures the donations are actually getting to where they are needed most and not being diverted to the black market or wasted in some way. I will post the pix on the blog when I get them.

Dad and I will be sending more barrels this month. There are enough medical supplies and milk here to fill four or five barrels - we just need the funds to ship that many. Grammy, Dad and I are covering the cost of a couple barrels, Kris and Christian and Emmalee are helping to cover cost of another.

Mr. Garbla is getting ready to ship for Christmas delivery. Barrels have to be in his shop in Hyattsville, MD by the last week-end in October. Dad and I will deliver the barrels to MD by that deadline.

Shipping cost is $150.00 per barrel. If you want to help, send a check to LOEP, c/o B. Iden, 370 Browntown Road, Browntown, VA 22610.

Just within our own extended family what a huge impact we could make on the lives of some orphan children this Christmas! We could actually fill four or five barrels with what is here waiting for shipment. We just need the shipping costs. I will be approaching a couple of local civic groups about helping out with shipping costs since it is a Christmas delivery.

Merry Christmas!

An Appalachian Update

Well, I figured it's been a while since I gave a report on what's happening in the great southwest of Virginia. Currently, I have a group of 25 Elderhostelers down the hall singing Bach's Cantata No. 4 and several other pieces, practicing for their concert on Friday night at Emory.

Just this morning, I got all dolled up in my coat and tie (big boy clothes!) for our District Fall Conference, at which the new Interim Director of VCE along with all the other Ivory Tower bosses gave updates, before they all headed back here to the Center for lunch. So we had quite the dignitaries here, along with every 4-H, ANR & FCS agent in the Southwest District.

After all of that, I'm preparing to emcee and participate in the Elderhosteler's Talent Revue tonight. Never let it be said that a Program Director doesn't wear a plethora of different hats.

Our corn maze is entering it's sixth week of operation, and with over 1000 visitors so far we are starting to turn a profit. We've been working there every weekend, and will continue to do so through Halloween. With all that, and all the programs going on in the last few weeks, I'm going to take a small break next week to breathe.

I have a Cloverbud Camp coming up right before Thanksgiving, it will be an Autumn Harvest Theme. I'm also excited about a new camp counselor training program that I'm implementing beginning this month. As you all know, all counselors and volunteers at camp must have 24 hours of training during the year before camp, which is quite a challenge for Extension Agents. I've planned a series of camp training mini-workshops, one each month for the next six months. They will be day-long Saturday sessions, and each one will focus on one aspect of camp...like planning evening programs, creating strong group identities and dynamics, and dealing with youth behavior. Counselors from around the district will be invited, and they can pick and choose which ones they want to attend. It's an idea I first had several years ago in Warren County, and now I'm able to implement it. It'll be the first really new thing I've done here, so I'm excited about it.

So that's what's happening here. Glad mom & dad got home safe, and I had a great time in ATL last week. I guess we'll all see each other at Thanksgiving...

Aunt & Uncle's Travels

Just a heads up to you all that Aunt & Uncle are traveling this week to Jacksonville to see Thomas & Gina. Maybe they'll post some pics for us?

Meanwhile, back at the ranch...

We had a great time in ATL this weekend. CB & I made it back to Abingdon in one piece, and I assume that he arrived in Front Royal in one piece. Here are a couple of the pictures Emma emailed me.

News From Browntown

So I totally forgot to put a note in here about my meeting with President Dunlop, thanks for the reminder Grammy. We met for breakfast, and also were joined by Robin Zanotti, one of the people who is with the alumni affairs office. Anyway, it was good, I spoke with President Dunlop about my time at Shepherd, how I enjoyed being in the communications program, and about the idea of maybe going back to teach at some point in my life, although that would have to a long time from now, obviously. He told me about the things going on at Shepherd as far as improvements, housing, etc etc. He also mentioned there is discussion of trying to get a more active alumni community OUTSIDE the washington area. He asked if it would work for me, to maybe attend college fairs now and thenm if they indeed need representation, talk to potential students about the school, that kind of thing. I told them about my job, how I got it, and how I didnt feel like I was too far behind the folks I work with that went to UGA, Northwestern, or the other big journalism schools. I also mentioned I was in the Scarborough Society, and he was FULLY aware that both Grammy and I are both in it. I had a vision that they "checked my file" before we met, so they knew what kind of support I give, if any. I also gave them the lowdown on work, what I do, how its all set up at CNN, etc etc. So it was a good meeting, and things were good. This weekend was good, as Emmalee mentioned, with Win and Campbell coming to town, and topping it off with a 3-0 start for the Redskins........

Sunday in Browntown

I'm glad that the Win & Campbell visit went well! I'm sure they enjoyed the southern hospitality of Atlanta, and the Almond Bros. concert. The BEST thing though, that happened this weekend is that the Redskins won! 3 - 0 !! fist time since 1991 (the same year they won a Super Bowl) but I'm not suggesting anything. Back to work this week will be somewhat of a let down for both Mom and me. We've looked at our Chile pictures several times now, and can't believe that the trip is over. Oh well, until next time! Have a good week everyone and keep the blog alive! Speaking of which, I've invited my friend Lucas from Chile to join our blog. He enjoyed looking at it while we worked in the Hospital and promises to post comments from time to time.

News from Atlanta

The news from Atlanta is that the weather has finally broken, and it is feeling like fall. Which is definitely a good thing, because Win and Campbell were here this weekend, and they would not have enjoyed 90+ degree heat. A good time was had by all this weekend in Atlanta, Win and Campbell came on Friday. We had a party to welcome them, they met many CNN folks, and a few musicians as well. Saturday we all stuffed ourselves into Andrew's Jeep and made our way to the Almond Brothers (I mean Allman Brothers) concert, which was entertaining. We had a good time babysitting the teenagers in the parking lot before the concert, and trying to teach them how to use jumper cables after the concert. Fun times.

All is quiet again on Rupley, the Virginians have left, Andrew is out watching football, and Jarrett is at the park. I am enjoying the solitude on the front porch for the time being.

As all good things must end, mom and i are back home. It was a most "excellent adventure"!! As we said many times while in Chile..........."next time...." Mom and I hope that you ALL can visit Chile and the Strellos sometime soon. I know they would love to show you their country. Until Thanksgiving when we're all together, enjoy these last couple of pictures. They were taken where the adventure began. Look for posts from Jaime and Lucas!
